PERSONALITY

Nightmare is stoic, cold, and abrasive. He is Winter personified; capable of great calamity and harsh beauty in equal measure. He is eloquent and well-read and has learned to rein in his anger, but when his limit is reached it is still fearsome. He is hated as equally as he is loved, and he has unjustly hurt so, so many. He carries that weight with him always.

He is also stubborn and set in his ways. It is very difficult to persuade him of anything beyond his own opinion. Once he is set on something then that is law. He is King, he fought for his title, and he will not take anything less than respect and acquiescence. For him to change it must be something he determines for himself, or the evidence must be very clear. Charisma and flattery has little effect on him.

To his court Nightmare is a source of stability and wisdom. He has spent centuries coming into his own and becoming the leader he hoped he could be. It was a long and painful journey filled with mistakes and the reminder of them is always with him, just out of sight. Still, his heart is closed off and the walls are steep. He has been hurt, deeply, and while the wounds are not fresh they ache all the same. Betrayal and rejection is his greatest fear and, despite surrounding himself with a support network, he is very slow to trust and form new bonds.

Nightmare is also a secret hopeless romantic and has a small subsection of his private library dedicated to his favourite romance novels. He has penned his own poetry, art, and historical anecdotes kept in their own area in the public library. (he also has some that he keeps to himself in his private library, far too personal to share with the public)

• when he’s particularly upset, the room gets cold and the things around him frost over
• his crown is ‘alive’ kind of, it’s been growing over time as he matured in his role as king
• the silk that he binds his old wings with is enchanted. his wings are still visible, but no one notices them. your gaze will just skip over them if they’re visible, as if they’re not even there. he likes to joke that his secrets are in plain sight. the enchantments are very strong, and only Dream, Error, or Ink can see through them.
• he doesn’t fly very much. he generally prefers to ride on his dragon if he has to travel long distances or go somewhere quickly
• he is almost never seen without his cloak; it’s become something of a comfort item. when he does have to go without it he’ll usually wear another cloak or cape depending on the function
• his old wings are a source of chronic pain; to manage it he often will visit a natural hot spring that he’s hidden away under layers of enchantments. it’s his private safe space where he doesn’t have to fear anyone seeing his damaged wings, and the warm water soothes his aches and pains.
• he does have tentacles, he just doesn’t usually summon them due to their association with the war
